WEATHER MAPS IN ENGLISH

Our objective is to explain in English the information contained on a common weather map.
First of all you have to set the location of the place you are going to talk about. Look at the underlined words:
  • It's raining in the North of Spain.
  • In the South it is sunny.
  • It is drier in the East than in the West.
  • It is warm in the Southeast.
  • It is cold near to Teruel.
  • It is cloudy in London area.
  • It is warm between Huelva and Almería.
  • It is windy in the Nothern part of Catalonia.
  • It is colder inland than on the coast.
  • If you are talking about the United Kingdom remember its different parts:

Pay attention to the meaning of the adjectives on the right map:  Nothern, Southern, Eastern and Western.
Then, you have to look at the main symbols in a weather map, those related to the state of the sky and precipitations:
It's cloudy.
It's raining.
It's overcast.
No sunshine.
Local showers in the Northwest.
With rain at times.
Heavy rain
It's sunny.
There is sunshine.
Clearsky.

Cloudy with some sunshine.
Mostly cloudy.
Some sunny intervals.
A bit cloudy.

Some maps include the temperature in degrees Celsius and you can translate the numbers into adjectives like freezing, cold, cool, temperate, mild, warm and hot. Example: "The map on the right shows mild weather in the UK but it is colder near to London."

Many maps contain information about the wind:
  • Speed of the wind: calm< breeze< moderate wind< strong wind< gale. Example: "The winds are moderate except in Nothern Scotland where the winds are stronger."
  • The direction of the wind is usually drawn with arrows. Example: "The map on the right shows Westerly winds in Scotland, Northern winds in England and Southwesterly winds in Nothern Ireland and Wales."
Look at the different ways to say the direction of the wind; the best way is written in bold letters.
    • Wind from the South= Southern wind= South wind.
    • Wind from the North= Northern wind= North wind.
    • Wind from the East= Easterly wind= Eastern wind= East wind.
    • Wind from the West= Westerly wind= Western wind= West wind.
    • Wind from the Southeast= Southeasterly wind.
