Theresien-Gymnasium München is one of the oldest grammar schools in Munich. It is located in the city centre, not far from the main station or Theresienwiese, world famous for its Oktoberfest. Established in 1895, our Gymnasium has a long tradition of humanistic education having a particular focus on classical languages (Latin and Ancient Greek). This emphasis on classical education still has an influence on educational values and goals today.

In the last couple of years the number of students has steadily grown to about 650, and as in any regular Bavarian Gymnasium students from the age of 10 to 19 attend our school. About 50 students pass the Abitur exams each year, therefore obtaining the degree necessary to attend university.

Today it is not only the focus on classical education but also the increasing role of modern foreign languages that seem appealing to students as well as parents. Students can, after starting with Latin in 5th grade, learn English, French and Italian. For all these languages there are regular exchanges with partner schools in the respective countries. The majority of our students come from families with a middle class or academic background, only a few have migration background.

With our relatively small number of students and staff, there are about 50 teachers, the atmosphere at our school is often valued as familial and intimate. Many teachers have known their students for many years and have been able to build up close relationships with them. This is also encouraged by our rich extracurricular program. At our school we offer a large variety of musical classes such as orchestras and choirs, two drama groups for different ages, classes in creative writing, rhetoric and sciences. For the Comenius project we’re going to offer an extra class in which the students are going to work on the topics as well as build up relationships to our partners abroad. We also see it as part of the project to give our students the opportunity of actually travelling to our partner schools and directly working together on the project and comparing the different results of our research.
